Is it possible to be constantly happy?

By | November 6, 2011

In short, no. This may be a shocking relief to some, but fortunately, we cannot be happy all the time. You may have heard an expression such as: “if it never rained you wouldn’t appreciate bright sunny days”. The Yin and yang theory – there cannot be happiness without sadness.

We often feel as though this is an unfair consequence, why do we have to endure such tragedy and torment to pursue a somewhat glimpse of happiness – it is all too often that it feels as though the happy moments are but an instant and the bad times last forever.

This, is but the beauty of life. Life is a big drama. We forget this, and get caught up in it, but there cannot be times of peace without war – there cannot be change without struggle. How did we get here? This is a question that could be argued until the end of time – is there a beginning or an end to time? Perhaps the simple fact that the yin and yang theory translates to our basic emotions and such in life, it could also go on to argue there can be no existence without the lack of existence.

Thus, is the irony of life.

Instantaneous ways to be happy

There are some guaranteed ways to increase your mood QUICK, thus causing you to be happy! These are very simple and are often forgotten!

The body is pumps a chemical called dopamine into the brain when performing basic activities – which sends a rewarding type of feeling to the body and brain – to reinforce behaviour needed to survive.

You can find that if you take a deep slow breath and exhale slowly, you will feel a slight relaxation despite how unnerved you may be.

Drinking water – the body likes 8 cups of water a day. the majority of people do not meet this daily need which results in headaches and anxiety among other issues of a body lacking in hydration. We also contribute to the flushing of water from our system by drinking caffeinated beverages, which in result, adds to dehydration.

Eating healthier foods – I’m sure everyone can relate to the feeling of eating too much fast food and junk food. Eating fruits and vegetables pack essential nutrients in maintaining a healthy body and a healthy mind.

Stretching/Exercising – Stretching & Exercising increases blood flow and relaxes your muscles, also providing a nice relaxation method. (See: Yoga!)

Practicing hygiene and grooming. A shower or a quick brushing I’d the teeth are nice ways to feel refreshed

Social interaction — When we don’t have anyone to socialize with on a regular basis, it takes a negative toll on our psyche. Staying socially active via chat/phone/texting/in person is a MUST to being happy.

Boredom — Pursuing things that interest us and hobbies keep our mind active. A bored mind is an unhappy mind.

Constantly learning to be happy

Therapists and psychiatrists tend to agree that one cannot harbor things inside, it’ll only continue to re-surface and manifest in other ways. If we truly wish to be happy, we need to deal with our issues as they arise.

Although, it’s often the case that we are expected to shush our drama and deal with it on our own. It’s not really a bad thing to seek help or talk about our issues. When help, and advice is offered, or  wisdom is shared, none of it will register unless you’ve gone through the necessary steps to sort out the issue at hand and make of it what you will.

We’ve all been in a situation where a friend was hurting over something going on in their life and out of compassion, we tried to offer words or comfort in hopes that it’d make their pain go away – that if only we could have them see the view from our experience, perhaps their learning curve would shorten and once again, be happy. (Perhaps you once experienced harsh heartbreak and now are able to look back on it without negative emotion)

The point being: our minds are constantly developing, even after we are considered an “adult”. Losing people and things close to us, along with other negative emotions will always take a toll on our psyche. As we develop and experience new events, we continue learning.

Life will bring you show you exactly what you are learning, in the form of suffering. Despite how cloudy and hazy the lesson/clarity may be. Existence moves at it’s own pace, whether we’re kicking and screaming through the ride, or turning a blind eye. Our consciousness and mind is working behind the scenes to help us realize the continued distress we experience, doesn’t have to be taken so seriously.
